Membership
Class
Formal membership to the local
church is not only biblical,
but it is also extremely important for a healthy and thriving
relationship with
the people of God. At the portico we
offer a 20-week study through the 1689 London Baptist Confession of
Faith (the
confession affirmed by the officers and members of the portico) as a
prerequisite for formal membership.
Dr. James
Renihan correctly points out “The ‘faith once for
all delivered to the saints’ (Jude 3) may be expressed in a
variety of ways. A
good confession communicates it systematically. Moving from
foundational topics
through the whole spectrum of belief, it presents doctrine in all of
its
interrelated beauty. Another way of stating the faith is by means of
questions
and answers, that is, catechetically. This method is useful for
memorization.
Christians have used it for millennia.” We find that the Baptist
Catechism is a
very useful in helping to teach the doctrines of the Christian faith as
they
are systematically set forth in the 1689 London Baptist Confession.
The membership class is a great way to
learn the doctrine of
the church and to get to know the leadership. We gather weekly in a
local home
to examine the Scriptures and to discuss the beliefs set forth in the
confession. Whether you are young in your walk, new to Reformed
Theology or
simply desire to study the rich historical doctrines of the Christian
faith,
please consider participating in this wonderful study.
